Almost 75 years ago, in the Battle of Guadalcanal, Master Sgt. Harry Francis Campbell, a member of the 1st Marine Division, lost his bracelet.

Remarkably, as NBC San Diego reports, a couple stumbled across his bracelet beneath six inches of sand on a New Zealand beach.

The bracelet contained the name H. Campbell etched above his service number as well as the date Aug. 7, 1942. The information was used by officials at the U.S. Marine Corps to track down his children, Jim and Patti Campbell.

Campbell retired in 1945 to go on and serve in law enforcement. He passed away in 2013.

Grateful for the memento, Jim Campbell told NBC San Diego, “I’m sure he is looking down on us – great thoughts, great memories and thank you to everyone involved.”
